RFID Card Types: What You Need to Know

RFID stands for Radio Frequency Identification, which is a technology that uses radio waves to communicate between a reader and an RFID tag. RFID cards are widely used for access control, identification, payment, and other applications. But not all RFID cards are the same. There are different types of RFID cards that operate at different frequencies and have different features and capabilities. In this blog post, we will introduce some of the most common RFID card types and their characteristics.

13.56MHz RFID Chip Card

One of the most popular RFID card types is the Mifare card, which is a brand name of NXP Semiconductors. The RFID Mifare cards operate at 13.56MHz frequency, which is also known as high frequency (HF) or near field communication (NFC) frequency. Mifare cards have a short reading range of up to 10 cm, but they offer high data transfer speed and security. Mifare cards can store up to 4 KB of data and support encryption and authentication protocols. Mifare cards are widely used for public transportation, loyalty programs, access control, and smart city applications .

Another common RFID card type is the 125KHz RFID card, which operates at low frequency (LF) or radio frequency identification (RFID) frequency. 125KHz RFID cards have a longer reading range of up to 1 meter, but they offer low data transfer speed and security. 125KHz RFID cards can only store up to 64 bits of data and do not support encryption or authentication protocols. 125KHz RFID cards are mainly used for animal identification, asset tracking, parking management, and access control .

There are also other types of RFID cards that operate at different frequencies, such as 134.2KHz, 433MHz, 860-960MHz, and 2.45GHz. Each frequency has its own advantages and disadvantages in terms of reading range, data transfer speed, security, interference, cost, and power consumption. Depending on the application and the environment, different types of RFID cards may be more suitable than others .

To summarize, RFID cards are not a one-size-fits-all solution. There are different types of RFID cards that operate at different frequencies and have different features and capabilities. Before choosing an RFID card type for your project or business, you should consider the following factors:

•  What is the purpose of the RFID card? What kind of data do you need to store and transmit?

•  How far do you need to read the RFID card? How fast do you need to read the RFID card?

•  How secure do you need the RFID card to be? Do you need to encrypt or authenticate the data?

•  How much do you want to spend on the RFID card? How long do you want the RFID card to last?

•  How compatible is the RFID card with your existing system and equipment? How easy is it to integrate and maintain?

By answering these questions, you can find the best RFID card type for your needs.
